man driving a car after dwiA DWI Assessment is necessary for anyone facing a DWI charge, and for those desiring their Limited Driver’s License. The assessment, and the required treatment, must be provided by a facility which is licensed by the State of North Carolina.

At Harte and Soul, Assessment and Counseling, the DWI Assessment is a comprehensive Substance Abuse evaluation that includes a clinical interview by a Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist (one who is also licensed to supervise Alcohol and Drug Counselors and Clinical Addiction Specialist Associates), a standardized substance abuse assessment, and in many cases, a review of your medical records along with your current medication regimen. The session lasts 75-90 minutes. In some cases, a brief follow-up session may be necessary in order to finalize your assessment results, particularly if required documents are not provided initially.

Please note that a NC DWI Assessment requires a copy of your citation, along with the paper from your breathalyzer or blood test, as well as your lifetime Driving Record from each state in which you have held a driver’s license. At Harte and Soul, Assessment and Counseling, in the majority of cases, you will leave the assessment with all documents needed for your attorney and the court. With your written informed consent, we will also send the necessary documents to your attorney that day, if you choose, so you have less worries. A DWI Assessment costs $100 per charge, which is set by the State of North Carolina.

Once you complete your assessment, an Assessment Outcome Report will be provided to you. This report will identify your recommended treatment level, which is based on the results of your comprehensive assessment, as well as state regulations. The DWI Assessment is valid for 6 months. You will have to begin treatment at any licensed DWI Facility within 6 months, or the assessment will expire or you will need to complete another assessment. It’s in your best interest to complete a DWI Assessment as soon as you are able since it allows the Court and the judge to see that you are taking the charge seriously. Completing your DWI Assessment quickly may also lessen the period of time in which you are unable to drive. Please note: The DWI Assessment is always required in order to be eligible for your Limited Driver’s License 10 days into the initial 30 day revocation period.
